Lamongan - The second day of the Spiritual Journey (Suju) program of Muhammadiyah 10 GKB (Smamio) Gresik High School in Latukan Karanggeneng Village, was full of warmth and new experiences for the students. Wednesday (22/4), the beautiful village atmosphere witnessed how these urban students blended with local wisdom through daily activities far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Starting from early morning, the students carried out the habit of congregational Tahajud and Subuh prayers at the Nurul Huda Mosque. However, the real life lessons begin when they return to their respective foster parents' homes.
Feeling the Pulse of Village Life
The students carried out various activities to help their foster parents. Some were busy in the kitchen preparing breakfast, helping to prepare rice stalls, and cleaning the house. Not only that, some students even accompanied their foster siblings to school before starting the main agenda of the day.
One of the most memorable moments occurred at 06.30 WIB. Zidan, Naura, Ari Arkana, Atiqa, Adelio, and Devanno—a group of eleventh grade students—were invited by Mr. Arif Nur Hidayah, Zidan's foster parent, to the expanse of green rice fields.
First Experience Harvesting in the Rice Fields
For these students, setting foot in the rice fields was an extraordinary experience. Moreover, they had the opportunity to harvest tomatoes directly. With enthusiasm, they learned to sort tomatoes that were perfectly ripe and suitable for sale to the market.
"I'm really happy because I've never been to a rice field before, let alone harvesting tomatoes. I just found out that you can grow tomatoes in the rice fields too, it's really exciting!" said Atiqa Mahdia Batul, a student in grade XI-5, with a beaming face.
Besides picking tomatoes, the students also received agricultural education from Mr. Imam Rokhim. They were introduced to the intercropping technique, where chili and cabbage plants thrive alongside rice plants.
"This is called the intercropping model," explained Mr. Imam while showing the diversity of commodities on his land to the students who listened with great curiosity.
This Spiritual Journey activity not only aims to strengthen spiritual aspects through worship, but also hone students' empathy and independence. By directly helping the foster family's economy, Smamio students are expected to be able to appreciate every hard work and be grateful for every process of life they go through.
