Gresik — A solemn atmosphere enveloped the Gresik Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PDM) Da'wah Building on Sunday morning (3/5/2026). Hundreds of congregants who attended seemed transfixed when the holy verses of the Qur'an began to be recited melodiously as the opening of the Sunday Morning Recitation.
It was Kevin Putra Fahardika, a student of class X-E1 at Muhammadiyah 10 GKB (Smamio) Gresik High School, who was trusted to be the qori in the routine agenda. Wearing neat clothes, Kevin recited Surah Ali Imran verses 144-146 with full appreciation.
Physical and Spiritual Preparation
Becoming a qori in front of regional leaders and congregations is certainly not an easy matter. The son of Mr. Dedy Hartanto and Mrs. Nurul Fauziyah admitted to making special preparations, both physically and mentally.
“Physically, I maintain my diet by limiting certain foods so that my body remains in top condition and does not affect the quality of my voice. Spiritually, I practice intensively with a mentor to perfect my maqamat (rhythm) and mentally so that I don't get nervous when performing,” said Kevin, who also has hobbies such as cycling and writing.
After performing, Kevin admitted to feeling relieved and proud.
"This is an extraordinary opportunity for me. I feel relieved, but there is still an independent evaluation so that I can be better in the future," he added.
Achievements and Continuous Development
Kevin himself is not a new figure in the world of tilawah. It is recorded that he has achieved various achievements, including 2nd Place in MTQ FFU #7, 3rd Place in MTQ FFU #8, and 1st Place in MTQ LP2PDM in 2024.
Tahfidz and Al-Islam SMAMIO teacher, Hogi Caesar Budianto, S.Pd., who accompanied him directly explained that the selection of Surah Ali Imran 144-146 has a deep meaning. The verse tells the story of the steadfastness of the companions after the Battle of Uhud and affirms that every soul will return to Allah.
"Becoming a qori requires consistency and sincerity. Not just the beauty of the voice, but also tadabbur or appreciation of every verse read," said Ustaz Hogi.
He hopes that new Kevins will emerge who are able to read the Word of Allah like Mazamir Alii Dawud (the flute of the Prophet Dawud's family).
The Meaning of Obeying Ulil Amri
This Sunday morning recitation presents a resource person, Syamsuddin, M.Ag., Deputy Chairman of the East Java PWM for Tarjih & Tajdid and Umrah & Hajj.
In his lecture themed "Understanding the Meaning of Obedience to Ulil Amri", he emphasized the importance of proportional obedience within the framework of sharia as well as the role of ulama and leaders in protecting the people.
The presence of SMAMIO students as the vanguard in Muhammadiyah's propagation activities proves that the school continues to be committed to producing a generation that is not only academically superior, but also has a strong spiritual closeness to Al-Qur'an.
