As part of the Spiritual Journey program series of SMA Muhammadiyah 10 (Smamio) GKB Gresik, this school held a Parenting Day activity with the crucial theme: "The Art of Communicating with Gen Z".
The event that brought together teachers, foster parents, and local residents aimed to dissect the challenges of educating children in the modern era.
Synergy and Learning Together
The activity began with remarks from the Deputy Head of Smamio for Ismuba, Hudzaifaturrahman, S.Th.I. In his speech, he expressed his highest appreciation to the residents of Latukan Village who have welcomed the presence of the Smamio extended family with open arms.
"We are very grateful to the residents and foster parents who have welcomed us warmly. In this era, understanding the right communication methods with Gen Z is a must. Let's make this momentum to learn together," he said.
Gayung samampung, H. Nur Ahmad, S.Pd., M.Pd., as Deputy Chairperson of PRM Latukan Village, also expressed his pride in the trust given by Smamio to Latukan Village.
"Thank you to the Smamio extended family. We apologize if in the process "There are shortcomings in educating during this program from both our side and the foster parents. Today is the right time for all of us to sit together to understand the characteristics of our children," he said.
Understanding the Character of Gen Z 'Spon'
The main session was filled by Ika Famila, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psychologist, Director of PLPK Smamio. Starting the material, Ika invited the audience to an interactive dialogue about the challenges faced by parents when dealing with today's teenagers.
Various answers emerged from foster parents, ranging from children's dependence on cell phones, their argumentative nature, excessive curiosity, to challenging expressions when given advice.
In response to this, Ika explained that parents must have full awareness of the differences in the times. She likened children at this age to "sponges".
"Our children are like sponges; they easily absorb things around them, but are also still very unstable and easily change direction. Therefore, parents must recognize their era so that there is no communication gap," explained Ika.
Tips for Communicating with Gen Z
In her presentation, Ika Famila shared several practical tips for parents in building a communication bridge with Gen Z, including:
Be an Active Listener: Give your child space to talk without interrupting or judging.
Validate Feelings: Acknowledge your child's emotions before offering solutions or direction.
Use Equivalent Language: Avoid overly patronizing or authoritarian communication patterns.
Digital Literacy: Parents need to understand the digital world that is the primary living space for Gen Z to remain relevant in providing advice.
The Parenting Day event closed with a warm discussion session, leaving a profound message that character education is not just about rules, but about how to build a sincere connection and understanding between parents and children.
